Why it exists

Pits do not fail at rest. They fail at 5 a.m. with fourteen pounds of brisket waiting, because the gasket went or the auger jammed or the grease tray had four cooks of fat in it. The jobs that prevent that take ten minutes and are easy to forget.

What it does

A list for your actual cooker

Kettle, offset, pellet, kamado, gas, drum and electric each get their own jobs. A pellet grill needs its fire pot cleared. A kettle does not have one.

Due dates that follow your cooking

Tell it how often you cook and the intervals adjust. Someone cooking weekly hits their deep clean sooner than someone cooking twice a summer.

Overdue, in your face

A count of what is late, so opening the tool tells you the truth in one glance.

The thermometer check

Ice water and boiling water, the two numbers, and what to do if your dial is out. A pit thermometer reading 25°F wrong makes every other number on every other tool wrong too.

Three steps, start to finish

Add your cookers and say how often you cook.

Tap Done today when you actually do a job.

Open it before a big cook and clear anything marked overdue.

Who it is for

Anyone with more than one cooker, anyone with a pellet grill, and anyone opening the season on a pit that sat under a cover all winter.

What it will not do

It tracks what you tell it. It cannot see rust. It also does not replace the manual for your specific model, particularly on gas, where a leak check follows the maker's instructions.

Questions

How often should I deep clean?

It depends on how much you cook, which is why the tool asks. Roughly, a grease-heavy cooker wants it every dozen cooks and every season end.

Does it cover several cookers?

Yes, with a nickname for each, so Big Red and the kettle keep separate histories.

Why does thermometer calibration matter so much?

Because every timing and doneness call you make rests on it. Check it twice a year and after any drop.
